DNA binding proteins regulate gene transcription but not only!

When we think about the functions of DNA binding proteins, the regulation of genome replication or gene transcription comes to mind. Kamel Hammani’s team has demonstrated that in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana, a protein from the mTERF family of transcription factors called MDA1 regulates the transcription of genes in chloroplasts but also the post-transcriptional stabilization of their messenger RNA through an unexpected collaboration with RNA binding proteins.
