Moss cuticle : an ancestor of lignin of vascular plant ?

Evolution of two essential biopolymers, lignin and cutin, has been required for successful plant transition from water to land. Investigating the evolutionary origin of lignin in moss which is devoid of lignin and vasculature, the team of Danièle Werck, in collaboration with scientists from University of Freiburg, reveals a common step in the evolution of the two biopolymers in terrestrial plants.
