Phthalate exposure and dementia: is there a link?

The involvement of micropollutants in the development of neurodegenerative diseases is increasingly considered. Thanks to a metabolomic study, scientists and clinicians from the University of Strasbourg, the CNRS and the University Hospitals of Strasbourg  highlighted high levels of a phthalate in the cerebrospinal fluid of patients with Lewy Body Dementia. This work, published on July 7, 2020 in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry, questions the possible role, in the pathogenesis of this neurodegenerative dementia, of an ubiquitous plasticizer in our environment.
