Due to the small size of their genome, plant viruses multiply expression strategies to produce the proteins required for their proliferation. The team of Veronique Ziegler-Graff, in collaboration with the University of Cambridge bioinformatics team (Great Britain) and a researcher from Iowa State University, Ames (USA) discovered in a family of viruses Luteoviridae, a new small gene encoding a protein essential to viral transport in the plant and remained unnoticed until now because of his unconventional translation fashion. This work is published in the journal PLoS Pathogens.
Encoded by a cryptic gene, a new viral protein out of the shadows
